Cookies: what are they and what is their purpose

A “cookie” is a small file containing various characters (string) that is sent to your computer when you visit a website. When you revisit that website, the cookie will that site to recognise the browser you are using. Cookies can store preferences and other information, and can be used to gather anonymous metric that will help us improve our website based on how they are used. You can, of course, set your browser to refuse cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being used, this can become a problem however, when some website features or services may not function properly without cookies…for example shopping baskets.

Current concerns with cookies

While there are many perfectly legitimate uses for cookies to enhance a users experience & functionality, some uses can present serious privacy issues. These concerns usually occur when a cookie is used to hold personal information for example, a person’s name, e-mail address, billing information etc, that is to be used across multiple sites to track behaviours and internet usage. Cookies can be first party (only working with the website you are visiting) or third party (set by an advertising banner and shared across sites). It is important to realise, therefore, that the privacy issue is not in using cookies but about the information that is gathered and how it is used.
